Tier 2 Module

Smart Navigation

AI-optimized routes that save fuel, cut emissions, and keep schedules on time.

Smart Navigation is an AI-powered voyage planning and route optimization engine that balances fuel efficiency, schedule adherence, weather safety, and emissions compliance in a single integrated platform. By ingesting real-time oceanographic data — including wave height, current vectors, wind forecasts, and ice boundary projections — alongside vessel-specific hydrodynamic models, the engine computes optimal routes that reduce fuel consumption by 8-15% compared to traditional great-circle planning. The platform goes beyond weather routing by incorporating regulatory constraints directly into the optimization algorithm. Routes are scored not just on fuel cost and transit time, but also on their emissions impact relative to CII targets, EU ETS exposure based on port-pair geography, and FuelEU Maritime GHG intensity contributions. This regulatory-aware routing ensures every voyage decision aligns with both commercial and compliance objectives. Smart Navigation supports just-in-time arrival planning, coordinating with port congestion data and berth availability signals to optimize approach speeds and reduce waiting times at anchor. The module integrates with Smart Simulator for pre-departure scenario testing and with Smart Performance for post-voyage route deviation analysis, creating a continuous learning loop that improves routing accuracy over time.

Key Capabilities

Multi-Objective Route Optimization

Simultaneously optimizes for fuel consumption, transit time, emissions, weather safety, and schedule reliability using advanced genetic algorithms. The engine evaluates thousands of route-speed combinations in seconds, presenting operators with a Pareto frontier of optimal solutions along with clear trade-off visualizations for each option.

Real-Time Weather Integration

Ingests high-resolution weather forecast data from ECMWF, GFS, and commercial providers, updating route recommendations as conditions evolve. The platform models vessel-specific seakeeping characteristics to assess the impact of wave, wind, and current conditions on fuel consumption, speed loss, and structural loading for each candidate route.

Regulatory-Aware Routing

Embeds CII, EU ETS, and FuelEU Maritime constraints directly into the route optimization engine. Each candidate route is scored on its regulatory impact, enabling operators to choose routes that balance commercial efficiency with compliance obligations. The system flags voyages that risk pushing a vessel below its CII rating target.

Just-In-Time Arrival Planning

Coordinates with port congestion data, berth scheduling systems, and tide tables to optimize approach speeds for arrival exactly when berths are available. Just-in-time arrivals eliminate unnecessary waiting at anchorage, reducing fuel waste, emissions, and port congestion while maintaining schedule commitments.

Voyage Progress Monitoring

Tracks active voyages against planned routes in real time, automatically recommending course or speed corrections when weather changes or schedule pressures warrant re-optimization. The monitoring dashboard provides ETA predictions with confidence intervals, fuel remaining projections, and emissions budget tracking for each vessel in transit.

How It Works

1

Define Voyage Parameters

Enter the origin, destination, cargo requirements, preferred ETA window, and any regulatory constraints for the upcoming voyage. The platform pulls vessel-specific performance curves, current weather forecasts, and port congestion data to establish the optimization boundary conditions.

2

Generate Optimized Route Options

The AI engine evaluates thousands of route-speed-timing combinations and presents a ranked set of optimal solutions. Each option includes estimated fuel consumption, transit time, emissions, weather risk score, CII impact, and EU ETS cost — allowing operators to make informed trade-off decisions.

3

Monitor & Adapt En Route

Once a voyage is underway, the platform continuously re-evaluates the route against evolving weather forecasts and schedule changes. If conditions shift significantly, the system recommends course or speed adjustments and quantifies their impact on fuel, time, and compliance metrics.

4

Analyze & Learn Post-Voyage

After voyage completion, Smart Navigation compares planned versus actual performance, identifying the sources of any deviations. These insights feed back into the routing models to improve future accuracy and are shared with Smart Performance for fleet-wide benchmarking.
